The Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo, designed by visionary architect Kisho Kurokawa, stood as an emblem of the Metabolist movement, embodying the idea of cities that could grow and evolve organically. After 50 years, it was demolished in 2022, but 23 of its 140 capsules were preserved. Welcome to Capsule [24].

Capsule [24] is an immersive VR experience that explores the digital preservation of historic sites, the magic of virtual tourism, and parallels to today’s housing crisis. Through virtual reality, the tower is reimagined, allowing for new narratives infused with playfulness, cinematography, and surrealism, offering a fresh perspective on the structure.

This project lies at the intersection of architecture, immersive art, and video games. The goal is to create a virtual world where spatial storytelling and interactive journeys blend historical authenticity with new possibilities. In this virtual capsule, users can explore at scale and, through interactions with various objects, uncover themes like impermanence and symbiosis that the tower represents.

True beauty lies in things that will die, things that will change.
— Kisho Kurokawa

This project was presented at the Toronto VR Continuum and also won Editorial Pick at the international architecture competition Redraw 5.0 by Non-A.
